Political Science at the NSF: The Politics of Knowledge Production

ABSTRACT The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently replaced its long-standing Political Program with two new programs: the Security and Preparedness Accountable Institutions Behavior Program. This article evaluates likely impact of reform by way original survey data. NSF Change Survey asked past recipients Standard Grant to evaluate their own previously funded proposals according program descriptions. Respondents were whether they would apply for same research project under thematic programs and, if would, believed it be necessary change framing or substance proposal. Data from suggest that themes are discourage some political scientists applying, while encouraging many more applicants shift accommodate call proposals.
